Why tint a vehicle?
Some people want the darker look. Others are trying to cut heat or glare. Automotive film can also add privacy and help protect the interior from UV exposure.
Sun protection and UV rays
Window film blocks much of the UV exposure that comes through untreated glass. The exact rating depends on the film. Less UV also helps slow fading and cracking of interior materials.
Heat reduction
Film can reduce solar heat entering the vehicle. Performance depends on the film construction, not just how dark it looks; ceramic film can reject heat at lighter shades.
Glare reduction and visibility
Tint reduces glare, but darker isn't always better. Night visibility and current Iowa law need to be part of the shade choice.
Privacy and security
Darker side and rear glass makes the interior harder to see from outside. It is not a substitute for locking the vehicle or removing valuables.
Interior preservation
Heat and UV exposure fade upholstery, dashboards, and trim. Film helps slow that damage, though it cannot stop normal wear or eliminate all sun exposure.
Added glass retention
Film may hold some broken side-window fragments together after an impact. It does not make the glass unbreakable or replace safety glass.
