Iowa law update / Effective July 1, 2026
50% VLT is now the front-side minimum
More tint is now legal up front.
Iowa now allows the side windows immediately beside the driver to measure as low as 50% visible light transmittance. The windshield must still allow at least 70% of light through.
VLT measures how much visible light passes through the complete glass-and-film combination. Lower numbers look darker. CVSi can show you the difference and measure the finished glass.

What does Iowa's new 50% tint law mean?
Effective July 1, 2026, the side windows immediately beside the driver may measure as low as 50% visible light transmittance. The windshield must still allow at least 70% of light through. The measurement applies to the complete glass-and-film combination.
How dark should I tint my vehicle?
The best shade depends on appearance, privacy, visibility, factory glass, and where the glass sits on the vehicle. CVSi can show you the options and measure the finished glass against current Iowa requirements.
Does factory privacy glass provide the same benefits as window film?
Factory privacy glass primarily darkens the glass. Depending on the vehicle and goal, an added film may be considered for a more complete appearance or different solar-control characteristics.
How long does new tint take to cure?
Cure time varies with film, weather, and glass. A slightly hazy appearance or small moisture pockets can be normal early in the process; follow the care instructions provided after installation.
Can old or damaged tint be replaced?
In many cases, existing film can be removed and the glass prepared for new film. The condition of the film, adhesive, glass, and defroster lines must be reviewed first.
